இரண்டு வருடங்கள் கழித்து எங்கள் ஊரின் அழகை ஆற, அமர ரசித்து அனுபவித்த ஒரு வாரத்தை பற்றிய பதிவு தான் இது. குடும்பத்துடன் நெல்லை சந்திப்பு சாலைக்குமாரர் சுவாமி கோவிலில் வழிபாட்டுடன் தொடங்கியது இப்பயணம். 2025-மார்கழியில் நாங்கள் ஊரில் இருந்த எட்டு நாட்களில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நெல்லை சுற்றுவட்டாரத்தின் இயற்கை எழில் எங்களை அடியோடு ஆட்கொண்டது என்று சொன்னால் மிகையாகாது.
களக்காடு முண்டந்துறை புலிகள் காப்பகம்(Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve-KMTR)
டிசம்பர் இருபத்தி மூன்று - நாங்களும் எனது தங்கை குடும்பத்தாரும் அதிகாலை களக்காடு முண்டந்துறையை நோக்கி கிளம்பினோம். போற வழியில மொதல்ல நாங்குநேரியில இருக்குற ஒரு குளத்துல water birds வந்திருக்கான்னு பாக்கலாம்னு போனோம். நம்பி கோயிலுக்கு அருகில் இருந்த அந்த குளத்துல பாக்குறதுக்கு நிறைய பறவைகள் இல்லாட்டினாலும் குளம் ரொம்ப அழகா, அமைதியா அந்த அதிகாலை-புத்துணர்வோடு இருந்தது. அங்கிருந்த ஒரு சிறிய , அழகான உணவகம். நம்ம ஊருக்கே உண்டான பரிவோடு, அளவளாவி பசியாற்றிய அந்த கடை உரிமையாளர்களை இன்றும் நினைவில் கொண்டுள்ளோம். குழந்தைகளுக்கு பிடித்த சூடான வடைகள், ஆப்பம், இட்லி, தோசைன்னு ரசிச்சு ருசிச்சு நிதானமாக நம்மூரின் slow-lifeஅ enjoy பண்ணி சாப்ட்டுட்டு அம்பை(Ambasamudram) வழியாக KMTR மலை ஏறினோம்.
December 23 — My sister’s family and we set out early in the morning toward Kalakkad–Mundanthurai. On the way, we first decided to stop at a pond enroute Nanguneri to see if any water birds had arrived. Although there weren’t many birds to see in the pond near the Nambi Temple, the place itself was very beautiful and serene, filled with the fresh calm of early morning. There was a small, lovely eatery there. We still remember the shop owners, who spoke warmly and served us food with the hospitality so characteristic of our hometown. Enjoying hot vadas, appam, idli, and dosa that the children loved, we ate slowly, savoring the flavors and truly enjoying the slow pace of life back home. After that, we climbed the KMTR hills via Ambasamudram.
மலை வளைவுகளில் அருவியாகவும், ஓடைகளாகவும், சேர்வலாறு-காரையார்-அணைகளின்-நதிநீர்-குழாய்களிலும் கவிதையாக கரைபுரண்டோடிய தென்மாவட்டங்களின் தேவதையாம் எங்கள் தண்பொருநை நாயகி தாமிரபரணியை கண்டும், கருத்தில் ஏற்றியும் KMTR வன அலுவலகம் வந்தடைந்தோம்.
Winding through the mountain bends as waterfalls and streams, and flowing poetically through the channels of the Servalar, Karayar dams, we beheld our Tamirabarani—the angel of the southern districts—and carried her presence in our hearts as we arrived at the KMTR forest office.

KMTR - Day1
மேற்குறிப்பிட்டுள்ள வகையில் நாங்கள் முன்னமே தங்கும் அறைகளை reserve செய்திருந்ததால் சரியாக பத்து மணியளவில் வன அலுவலகம் வந்தடைந்தோம். அறைகளில் luggage-ஐ வைத்துவிட்டு அகஸ்தியர் அருவியில் குளிக்க சென்றோம். எந்த mineral water bottle-லிலும் கிடைக்காத மூலிகை மணத்தோடு, இனிமையாக, குளிர்ச்சியாக ஆர்ப்பரித்து கொட்டிய அருவியில் நீராடி உயிருணர்ந்தோம்.
Since we had reserved the rooms in advance using the links mentioned above, we reached the forest office right on time, around 10 o’clock. After leaving our luggage in the rooms, we went to bathe at Agastiyar Falls. Standing in the waterfall—gushing with a pleasant chill and a gentle sweetness, carrying a herbal fragrance unlike anything found in bottled mineral water—we felt truly alive and rejuvenated.
வன அலுவலகத்தை ஒட்டிய உணவகத்திலேயே, சூடான வீட்டு சாப்பாட்டை போன்றே சுவையாக இருந்த, மதிய உணவை ருசித்து விட்டு சிறிது நேரம் rest எடுத்தோம். அறையை சுற்றிலும் வானரங்களின்(Bonnet Macaques) நடமாட்டம். அமைதியான காட்டு வழி சாலைகள், எளிய மலைவாழ் ஊழியர்கள் என நகலான நகரவாழ்விற்கு முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட சூழல். அதுவும் நம் சொந்த ஊரிலேயே உள்ள ஒரு இதமான சூழல் எனும்பொழுது மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு கேக்கவா வேணும்.
We enjoyed a hot, homely lunch at the canteen adjoining the forest office and then took some rest. Bonnet macaques kept moving around the rooms. Quiet forest roads and the simple, warm lives of the hill staff created an atmosphere completely different from our frenetic daily life. And since this tranquil setting was right here in our own hometown, it only added immeasurably to our joy.
முப்பது வருடங்களுக்கு முன் எங்கள் தாய் மாமா விக்கிரமசிங்கபுரம்(V.K.Puram) Madura Coats-இல் பணி புரிந்த பொழுது ஒவ்வொரு விடுமுறையும் எங்களுக்கு தலையணையிலும் சேர்வலாரிலும் முண்டன்துறையிலும் தான் கழிந்தது. அன்று விதைக்கப்பட்ட ஈர்ப்பு தான் இன்று வரை காட்டின் மீதும், இயற்கையின் மீதும் தீராக்காதலாய் வேரூன்றி வளர்ந்திருக்கிறது.
Thirty years ago, when our maternal uncle was working at Madura Coats in Vikramasingapuram (V.K. Puram), we spent every holiday in the lap of nature - at Thalaiyanai, Servalar, and Mundanthurai. The fascination sowed in us during those days has rooted deeply and grown into an enduring, unquenchable love for the woods that thrives in us even today.
மாலை 4:30 மணிக்கு தேநீர் அருந்திவிட்டு முன்னர் பதிவு செய்திருந்த Forest Safari-க்கு கிளம்பினோம். நாங்கள் மொத்தம் ஆறு பேர் இருந்ததால் எங்களுக்கென்று பிரத்யேகமாக Canter வண்டியை ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்தார்கள். வன அலுவலர் ஒருவரே செலுத்த அவருடன் இரு ஊழியர்களும் சேர்ந்து கொண்டார்கள். பிரசித்தி பெற்ற சாஸ்தா கோவிலான சொரிமுத்தையனார் கோவிலையும், பண்டு தொட்டு காட்டை காக்கும் மரபுடைய வனப்பேச்சி அம்மன் கோவிலையும் தாண்டி மலைவாழ் பழங்குடியினரான காணிகளின் குடியிருப்பு வழியே வண்டி மெல்ல நகர்ந்தது.
After having tea at 4:30pm, we set out for the forest safari we had booked earlier. Since we were six in all, a canter vehicle was arranged just for us. A forest officer drove the vehicle, accompanied by two staff members. Passing the famous Sorimuthaiyanar Temple dedicated to Lord Sastha, and the Vanapechi Amman Temple—revered from ancient times as a guardian of the forest—the vehicle meandered the route slowly through the settlement of the Kani tribe, the indigenous hill people.
அடர் அமைதி. காட்டின் பச்சை நறுமணம் இடை இடையே வண்டுகள் மற்றும் பறவைகளின் ஒலி. மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மலையின் நெல்லை பகுதி - அகஸ்திய மலை, கண்ணுக்கெட்டிய தூரம் வரை சுற்றிலும் பல்வேறு மலைகள். நடுவில் அணையாக பரணி புகழும் தாமிரபரணி. ஒரு நொடி- காசு, பணம், பதவி, பந்தம், சுகம், துக்கம், அந்தஸ்து, நாகரிகம் அனைத்தையும் மீறிய அமானுஷ்ய சூன்யம்! அலாதியான... வெகு அலாதியான பரவசம்! ஒற்றை அணுத்துகள் பிரிந்து உருவான பேரண்டம். அதில், எழுதும் இந்த மடுவும் ஒன்று; மடுவின் முன் விரியும் மலையும் ஒன்று.
Dense quietude. The green fragrance of the jungle, amplified by the sounds of bees and birds. The Tirunelveli stretch of the Western Ghats—Agasthya Malai, with countless mountains stretching all around as far as the eye can see. In the middle of it all, flows the Tamirabarani, like the queen acknowledging the standing ovation of her chieftains. For a moment— wealth, status, bonding, pleasure, sorrow -all fade away, surpassed by a heavenly void! A rare… truly rare ecstasy! The split of a single atom manifests into a Universe inside which this miniscule me and those mighty mountains are one. Holy Self! How do i elaborate this?!

இவ்வெண்ணங்களுக்கெல்லாம் சிகரம் வைத்தாற்போல் ஒரு மலை உச்சியில் வண்டியை நிறுத்தினார் ஓட்டுநர். எங்களை இறங்கி எதிர்புறம் நோக்க அறிவுரைத்தார். அங்கே, வெகு தொலைவில், மிகப் புனிதமான பாணதீர்த்தம் அருவி பால் போல் பொழிந்து கொண்டிருந்தது! இந்த அருவிக்கு எங்கள் பள்ளி பருவத்தில் படகில் வந்து நீராடியிருக்கிறோம். படகு எண்ணெய் கழிவுகள் ஐந்து தென்மாவட்டங்களின் குடிநீர் ஆதாரமான இந்த அணை நீரை மாசுபடுத்துவதால் சில வருடங்கள் முன்பிருந்து இங்கு சுற்றுலா தடை செய்யப்பட்டது. அருவிக்கு மேற்புறம் விண் தொடும் உயரத்தில் பொதிகை என்ற அகஸ்திய மலை சிகரம்! ஆதவன் அஸ்தமிக்கும் நேரம் நாங்கள் கண்ட இக்காட்சி கடைநொடி வரை கருத்தில் நிற்கும்!
As if crowning all these thoughts, the driver stopped the vehicle atop a mountain peak and asked us to get down and look ahead. Yonder, was the sacred Banatheertham waterfall flowing like milk. We had once bathed in this waterfall during our school days, reaching there by boat. However, since the last few years, tourism has been banned here in order to avoid pollution of the waters from the boat fuel. This dam is the source of drinking water for five southern districts. Above the waterfall, almost touching the skies, stood the peak of Agasthya Hills. Also known as the Podhigai hills. That sunset is something that will remain etched in our minds forever.

இந்த மலைகளின் ஊடே முற்காலத்தில் காணிகள் வாழ்ந்ததாகவும் அணை கட்டும் பணிகள் தொடங்கிய பின் அவர்கள் புலம்பெயர்ந்து தற்போதுள்ள குடியிருப்பிற்கு வந்ததாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. மேலும் பொருநை என்று பழங்காலத்தில் பெயர்பெற்ற தாமிரபரணி நதியின் ஆதி ஊற்று இம்மலைகளில் உள்ள புளியங்குளம் என்ற இடத்தில இருப்பதாகவும் கூறினார் நம்முடன் வந்த அலுவலர். சிறிது நேரம் அந்த மெய்சிலிர்க்கும் எழிலை கண் குளிர கண்டுவிட்டு மீண்டும் அறைக்கு திரும்பினோம். திரும்பியதும் இரவு உணவிற்கு order குடுத்துவிட்டு நாங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து கொண்டு வந்திருந்த தின்பண்டங்களை கொரித்துவிட்டு jolly-ஆக dumb charades விளையாடினோம். இரவுணவு தயாரானதும் சென்று உணவருந்திவிட்டு அந்த இனிய நாளின் களைப்பு தீர உறங்கினோம்.
It is said that long ago, the Kani tribe lived in these mountain ranges, and after the construction of the dam began, they migrated to their current settlement. The officer who accompanied us also mentioned that the original source of the Tamirabarani River—once known in ancient times as Porunai—is located in these mountains, at a place called Puliyankulam. After spending some time awestruck by the scenery, we returned to our rooms. We placed an order for dinner and unpacked the snacks we had brought from home, enjoying a lively game of dumb charades. When the dinner was ready, we went to eat. Later, tired but content, we slept, letting the sweet exhaustion of the day wash over us.
KMTR - Day2
Around 5:30–5:45 am, as the first light appeared, we got ready and took a stroll along the trails around our quarters. The rhythm of the waters flowing nearby, herd of grazing spotted deers and the morning calls of birds weaved a delightfully magical setting. After breakfast, around 7:45–8:00, the Trek Tamil Nadu team picked us up in a van and took us to the starting point of the Karaiyar–Moolakasam trek. From there, we trekked for about 3-4 hours. Two young women from the team guided us, pointing out Nilgiri langurs, jungle fowl, giant millipedes, various colorful insects, wild boars, mountain springs, and even a hole dug by a wild boar in search of tubers. Spotting the Malabar Pied Hornbill was one of the highlights of the trek. By around 11:00, we returned, checked out and set out for Nellai

On Christmas day and the next, we went birdwatching in the Koondankulam Bird Sanctuary area as well as the Kanyakumari surroundings. Each day, we left our parents’ home at dawn, explored these places in search of birds, and returned by afternoon. Few days we also went birdwatching in the water bodies and fields in our own neighborhood.

குறிப்பிடும் விதமாக ஆப்ரிக்க ஐரோப்பிய கண்டங்களிலிருந்து வலசை வரும் வரித்தலை வாத்து, பெரும் பூநாரை முதல் பலவிதமான ஆந்தைகள், வல்லூறுகள் மற்றும் சிறிய நீர்ப்பறவைகளான உள்ளான்கள் வரை அனைத்தையும் காண முடிந்தது. இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம் Oct முதல் March வரையிலான வலசை காலம்(migratory season) மற்றும் Nov-Jan மாதங்களில் நிலவும் இதமான தட்பவெட்பம். இதில் மிக சுவாரஸ்யமாக, சில பறவையினங்கள் விவசாய பணிகளுடன் தமது ஆதாயத்தையும் கண்டு வயல்களில் எவ்வாறு ஒத்து வாழ்கின்றன என்பதையும் கண்டோம். வயல்களை உழும் tractor இயந்திரம் மண்ணை உழும்பொழுது tractor-க்கு பயப்படாமல் சரியாக கணக்கு பார்த்து குறிவைத்து புழுக்களை கொத்தி உண்பதை பார்க்க மிகுந்த அதிசயமாக இருந்தது.
Notably, we were able to spot a wide variety of migratory birds coming from the African and European continents—ranging from the Bar headed geese and Greater flamingos to the owls, raptors, waders, and smaller water birds. This is primarily due to the migratory season from October to March, combined with the pleasant climate prevailing between November and January. What was particularly fascinating was observing how some bird species aligned their activities with agricultural work to their advantage. Watching them carefully pick worms from the plowed fields as the tractor tilled the soil—without showing any fear of the machine—was truly remarkable.

Painted Stork PC: Kalirajan SubramanianFalling for the flamingosWhile in Koonthangulam, we heard from fellow birders that a flamboyance(group) of greater flamingos has arrived in the surroundings of Kanyakumari. We couldn't contain our excitement because few years ago when we had visited Pulicat lake, we had missed watching the flamingos. So, this opportunity, we wouldn't miss for the world. On the dawn of the 27th, we were promptly on the Kanyakumari highway! Good morning, flamingos! Here we come! கூந்தங்குளத்தில் இருந்தபோது, கன்யாகுமாரி சுற்றுப்புறங்களில் பெரும் பூநாரைகளின் ஒரு குழு வந்திருக்கிறது என்று மற்ற பறவை ஆர்வலர்களிடமிருந்து கேள்விப்பட்டோம். சில வருடங்களுக்கு முன் பழவேற்காடு ஏரிக்கு சென்றபோது ஃபிளமிங்கோக்களை பார்க்க முடியாமல் போனதால், இந்த செய்தி எங்களை ரொம்பவே உற்சாகப்படுத்தியது. இந்த முறை அந்த வாய்ப்பை எப்படியும் தவற விடக்கூடாது என்று முடிவு செய்தோம். 27ஆம் தேதி விடியற்காலை, நேராக கன்யாகுமாரி நெடுஞ்சாலையை பிடித்தோம்! காலை வணக்கம், பூநாரைகளே! இதோ வருகிறோம், உங்களை தரிசிக்க! |

Greater Flamingos court through spectacular group displays rather than one-to-one romance. Large flocks perform synchronized movements such as head-flagging, wing-salutes, marching, and vocalizing, which help stimulate hormones and signal health and readiness to breed. From these mass displays, birds select partners and form temporary monogamous pairs for a single breeding season. Once paired, they cooperate closely in nest building, incubation, and chick care, after which the bond usually dissolves, and new partners are chosen in later seasons |

Science Center போன்று குடும்பத்தோடு சென்று பார்க்க வேண்டிய அறிவுசார் இடங்களில் புதியதும் முக்கியமானதுமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. நமது தாமிரபரணி கரையில் பண்டைய நாகரிகம் செழித்த வரலாற்றை Technology-இன் உதவியோடு அனைவரும் ரசித்து புரிந்துகொள்ளும் வண்ணம் நிறுவி உள்ளார்கள். A highly recommended place to visit 🠷.
Another noteworthy place we visited in Nellai was the Porunai Museum. Like the Science Center in the Collectorate, it is a modern and significant educational spot, perfect for a family visit. The museum is designed in a way that allows everyone to appreciate and understand, with the help of technology, the rich history of the ancient civilization along the banks of our Tamirabarani River. A highly recommended place to visit 🠷.

What's noteworthy is this: exactly a year ago, in December 2024, we visited the dazzling dream city of Dubai. We witnessed the peak of modern human civilization, cutting-edge technology and world-class facilities. To top it all, after almost 25 years, we met both our college friends again. Yet, while attempting to blog about that trip, nothing unique seemed to flow out. It felt like everything was already out there in social media and the internet. But when it comes to gentle, deeply personal experiences … the home is always where the heart is!
